Description: |
This course will focus on issues of diversity, oppression, and social justice. It will be designed to address people’s biases based on race, ethnicity, culture, age, sex, sexual orientation, and/or social and economic status. A portion of the course will also focus on aspects of bias and discrimination within the criminal justice system. Using a sociological framework, this course will assist students in understanding the complex nature of the person in the environment, taking into consideration the dynamics of social oppression, diversity and social functioning, and how their role as future advocates can assist these marginalized groups. Students will develop greater awareness of the ways in which cultural and other background factors affect perceptions and feelings, and how those background factors can impact their representation of oppressed groups. |
